Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967 as the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Her grandfather, her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer was the first Roberts to settle in Atlanta. Early on, her father was interested in theatre. As a student of Emory University, he performed in several productions in Atlanta. He joined the military in 1953. During his time working in Biloxi Mississippi, he appeared in the military's production, which featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was as well in the air force. In 1955, the couple married and their son Eric Anthony was born. The couple divorced in 1957. the air force and Walter was enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter started his work at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. The year 1964 was when Walter together with Betty Lou began production on the local Saturday morning children's television program called Bum Bum and His Buddies that they designed and funded. They established an Actors and Writers Workshop in the same year. The workshop was in operation for six years. Within this period, they had two more daughters Lelisa (called Lisa) Billingsley in 1965, and Julia (called Julie) in 1967.
